Kiulu White Water Rafting – Kota Kinabalu

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

On 7th Jun ’10, that was the day we started our journey in KK. What was our first activity and destination that we would go?

We attached to Excel Dive & Tours ( Borneo) Sdn Bhd which is a licensed Inbound and Outbound tour company operating in the capital city of Malaysian Borneo Sabah, Kota Kinabalu since 2001. Excel Dive & Tours are located in Wisma Sabah (G18, Ground Floor, Jalan Tun Razak), well known as the tourist hub, in the city centre of Kota Kinabalu. Our KK Trip transportation was arranged by this tour company. I would say that this company would be able to customise different kind of tour packages to suit different people needs. The driver who fetched us during our trip was offering excellent service with his helpful and kind attitude. For more information can be refer to Excel Borneo Tours.

We took this photo while we were waiting the van (Excel Dive & Tours) to Kiulu White Water Rafting.

“The Kiulu River white water rafting is a trip that suits those seeking a moderately adventurous and relaxing trip.

The furthest rafting distance is 15 kilometers when the water level is high, and 7 kilometers of excursions at normal water level. The grade is between 1 to 2.

Kiulu River is located at Kampung Pukak Kiulu, about 1 hour drive from Kota Kinabalu (42 kilometers away).”

Four of us also haven’t tried water rafting before so we chose to go for this Kiulu River which more suit to beginner’s level. For those advance should opt for Padas River. Kiulu river is certified as Level I – II; while Padas river is graded as Level III – IV. This water rafting cost RM150 per person.

Walking around the place and took a few shots.

Some safety briefing such as how and where to sit on the raft, correct way to hold the raft paddles, safe way to get on to the raft if being thrown in the river, how to pull team member to the raft and etc. Our whole journey would take approximately 2 hours.

Wow …… getting ready to start our jouney  ……

We sat in front and the chief rafter sat at the back to take care and control the raft. That morning, were told that the river was quite speedy compare to normal time. It was fun as our raft went up and down following the wave of the river; we seemed like taking a roller coaster ride.

Along the ride, we saw a few villagers picnicked beside the river and their children were playing in the river. Towards the end of the journey, we get the chance to jump down from the raft and do the body rafting in the clear water with this good weather. I enjoyed it so much … However, I was nearly thrown away by the strong wave of the river and needed the chief rafter to come and rescue me. So scary…..  I would definitely want to challenge myself again by going to the more thrilling river for different kind of experience.

We did not able to take more photos as all our camera do not have waterproof cover to protect. As such, we only buy from the people who helped us to take these few shots.

This is the place where we had our lunch. The food was not bad although did not have many varieties. After we had our lunch, we headed back to Borneo BeacHouse for a rest.

The food was nice and we had spent a great evening there.
